Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine to address trauma and its effects on the body and nervous system. Trauma can be the result of overwhelming experiences that leave individuals feeling frightened, helpless, or unable to cope. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses on verbal processing, Somatic Experiencing places emphasis on the physiological and somatic manifestations of trauma.
SE recognizes that traumatic experiences can become "stuck" in the body, leading to a range of physical and emotional symptoms. The goal of Somatic Experiencing is to help individuals release the trapped energy associated with traumatic events, allowing the nervous system to return to a state of balance and regulation.
The SE practitioner guides the client's attention to bodily sensations, encouraging them to explore the felt sense of their experience rather than just discussing it intellectually. Through gradual and gentle exposure to the physical sensations associated with trauma, individuals can learn to self-regulate and discharge the pent-up energy, leading to a reduction in trauma-related symptoms.
